IoF London Conference: 24 November 2011
Alan deilivered a 45 minute plenary at the IoF London Region Annual Conference entitled:
'Cause popularity: just the way it is?'
Is it really easier to raise money for dogs than for diabetes? For cancer than conservation? For kids than for kidneys? Alan looked at recent research and analysis from across the sector to see which causes really are easier to raise money for, and explained why. He also looked at why different types of people support different causes. He concluded the session with suggestions of how every cause can increase its fundraising popularity by working on the very simple, but often ignored, theory of ‘closeness.’
Winning New Business Academy: 15-17 November 2011
This academy was designed for Suppliers and Agencies working in the UK and European Not-For-Profit Sectors and was aimed at teaching business development people how to come first – and to win the work that they get to charge for! .
It was run by Alan Clayton and Ken Burnett, two of the most successful suppliers to the voluntary sector in the UK – combining a genuine passion for the sector and its values with the commercial success that has driven innovation across the sector.
Between them, they have worked with over three hundred voluntary sector clients in the UK and around the world. They have done this with a series of businesses all specialising in the values of the voluntary sector, with a firm belief that commercial success drives the kind of excellence that the sector needs and deserves.
This was the first time we had run an event for commercial companies and it was highly appreciated and evaluated by everyone who took part.
Thanks guys!
Major Appeals Laboratory III: 9-11 November 2011
With special guest Giles Pegram CBE.
Due to popular demand we once again ran the Major Appeals Laboratory.
Following from the successes of our previous two labs, we took 10 senior fundraisers through the process of running a major appeal from start to finish. Some of the questions we tackled included: how can you ask a donor for £1million? What is the ‘asking paradox’ and why is it so important? What is the single thing that will influence your appeal’ssuccess or failure? What three questions MUST the CEO be able to answer? Why does 100 per cent success rate at asking mean something’s wrong? How does a major appeal transform an organisation for ever?
The Laboratory was another resounding success - in fact, we believe it was even better than the first two times we ran it judging by the overwhelmingly positive feedback from attendees.

'Fundraising bashing: how excessive political correctness is damaging fundraising and what you can do about it.'
‘We need logical solutions, not emotion.’ ‘We can’t be donor led.’ ‘We shouldn’t need fundraising.’ ‘You’re a necessary evil.’ ‘I am entitled to dictate and edit every word of your copy.’ Is there any fundraiser out there that is not sick fed up of hearing things like this? And how many just take it the chin and feel hard done by? Or, worse, just leave the job or the sector? This First Thursday will give the answers to how a fundraiser can respond to the growing tide of Fundraising Bashing that is threatening income and careers.

The Powerful Fundraiser - the science and art of being brilliant, emotive and inspiring: 23 May 2011
There has long been criticism that ‘the sector’ provides training in techniques, but falls short on training for the individual to become a truly effective person. This event, run in partnership with the Institute of Fundraising was designed to rectify that.
Over 50 senior-level fundraisers attended this event at Plaisterers Hall, London to hear the three presenters talk about how emotional resonance and rapport form the essential building blocks of truly powerful fundraising - the highlight of which was a presentation by Dr Susanne Droste, a qualified neuroscientist and behavioural researcher, who was finally, finally able to explain to the audience what happens in the brain and body when a donor receives an inspiring and effective fundraising appeal.
